Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 mix for flavor)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup milk

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

1 large egg

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1 cup beef broth

1/2 cup onion, sliced

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 tbsp butter

1 tsp soy sauce

1 tsp dried thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:

    - In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the steaks tender.

      - Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

        Cook the Steaks:

          - Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties to the skillet.

            - Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

              Make the Mushroom Gravy:

                - In the same skillet (do not wipe out the drippings), melt the butter over medium heat.

                  - Add the sliced onions and mushrooms to the skillet. Sauté until the onions are translucent and mushrooms are tender, about 5-6 minutes.

                    - Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions; stir to combine. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to cook off the raw flour flavor.

                      - Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Stir in the soy sauce and dried thyme, and bring to a simmer. Cook until slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

                        Combine and Serve:

                          - Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them. Let simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors.

                            - Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with a generous drizzle of mushroom gravy, alongside mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
