One of the standout ingredients in our high protein pepperoni pizza rolls is whole wheat flour. Unlike refined white flour, whole wheat flour retains the bran and germ of the wheat kernel, making it a more nutritious option. This means it is higher in fiber, which aids in digestion and helps keep you feeling full longer. Additionally, whole wheat flour contains essential nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and antioxidants. By using whole wheat flour, you enhance the nutritional profile of your pizza rolls while still achieving a satisfying texture.

Ingredients

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup vital wheat gluten

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon salt

¾ cup warm water

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 ½ cups low-fat mozzarella cheese, shredded

½ cup turkey pepperoni, chopped

¼ cup marinara sauce (for dipping)

Optional: fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, vital wheat gluten, baking powder, garlic powder, oregano, and salt. Mix well until combined.

Add Wet Ingredients: Slowly pour in the warm water and olive oil. Stir the mixture until a dough begins to form. It should be slightly sticky but manageable.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

Roll it Out: Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a rectangle that is approximately ¼ inch thick.

Add Fillings: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella evenly over the rolled-out dough. Evenly distribute the chopped turkey pepperoni on top of the cheese.

Roll It Up: Starting from one end of the rectangle, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the ends and seam to seal the roll.

Cut into Rolls: Use a sharp knife to slice the rolled dough into approximately 1-inch thick pieces. You should have about 12-15 pizza rolls.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Bake the Rolls: Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each one. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Serve: Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Serve them warm with marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
