Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

3/4 cup buttermilk

2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped (optional)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)

2 cloves garlic, minced (for brushing)

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

Incorporate Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

Add Cheese and Chives: Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese and fresh chives (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.

Stir in Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients. Gently mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it’s okay if the dough is a little sticky.

Shape the Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Lightly knead the dough 2-3 times until it comes together, then pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out circular biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Gather any scraps, re-pat the dough, and cut out more biscuits until all dough is used.

Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with minced garlic. Brush the tops of the biscuits generously with the garlic butter.

Bake: Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Finish and Serve: Once out of the oven, brush the tops again with any remaining garlic butter. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm with your favorite soup, salad, or enjoy them on their own!
