The humble brownie was first documented in a cookbook published in 1897, but its exact origins remain somewhat of a mystery. Some believe they originated from a failed chocolate cake recipe, while others credit a chef who decided to make a dessert that didn’t require baking. Regardless of how they came to be, brownies quickly became a staple in American households and dessert menus, known for their rich texture and versatility.

1 cup (226g) unsalted butter

1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

1 cup (200g) brown sugar, packed

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour

1 cup (85g) unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon instant coffee granules (for that café flavor)

1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Café Latte Frosting:

1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened

2 cups (240g) powdered sugar

2 tablespoons espresso or strong brewed coffee (cooled)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Optional: cocoa powder for dusting

For Garnish:

Chocolate shavings or chocolate-covered coffee beans

Instructions

Prepare the Brownies:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.

      Melt the Butter:

        - In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in granulated sugar and brown sugar until fully combined.

          Combine Eggs and Vanilla:

            - Allow the butter mixture to cool slightly, then mix in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.

              Dry Ingredients:

                - In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and instant coffee granules.

                  Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures:

                    - Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.

                      Add Chocolate Chips:

                        - Fold in the chocolate chips for extra richness!

                          Bake the Brownies:

                            - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and smooth out the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let cool in the pan.

                              Make the Frosting:

                                - In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until well combined. Add espresso, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, and continue beating until fluffy.

                                  Frost the Brownies:

                                    - Once the brownies are completely cooled, remove them from the pan using the parchment paper overhang. Spread the café latte frosting evenly over the top.

                                      Garnish and Serve:

                                        - Sprinkle cocoa powder on top for an elegant touch, and garnish with chocolate shavings or coffee beans for the finishing touch.

                                          Slice and Enjoy:

                                            - Cut into squares and serve your decadent brownies alongside a cup of coffee or as a delightful dessert.
