Ingredients

12 oz spaghetti

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 lb ground beef (or turkey)

1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Spaghetti: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.

Add the Meat: Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon, around 6-8 minutes.

Mix in Tomatoes and Herbs: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Combine with Pasta: In a large bowl, combine the cooked spaghetti with the meat sauce mixture. Mix well until the spaghetti is evenly coated with the sauce.

Layer the Cheeses: In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the spaghetti mixture. Spread dollops of ricotta cheese over this layer, then sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese. Add the remaining spaghetti mixture on top, and finish with the remaining mozzarella and all of the grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish: Once out of the oven, let the casserole sit for about 10 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired before serving.
