Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

1 large apple (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 large egg

1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)

1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until well blended.

Cut in Butter: Add the cubed cold butter to the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Apples: Fold in the diced apple pieces gently.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vanilla extract, and egg until smooth.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture. Stir gently with a wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly crumbly and somewhat sticky.

Shape the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Gently pat it into a circle about 1-inch thick. Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to score the dough into 8 wedges (like a pizza), but do not cut through completely.

Add Brown Sugar Topping: Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top of the scone dough.

Bake: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly golden on top.

Cool: Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. Then, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Garnish (Optional): For an extra touch, you can sprinkle coarse sugar on top while they are still warm for added crunch.
