Ingredients

1 loaf of French bread (about 1 pound), cut into 1-inch cubes

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 cups apple pie filling (store-bought or homemade)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, place the cubed French bread. Set it aside while you prepare the custard mixture.

Make the Custard: In another mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine the Mixtures: Pour the custard mixture over the cubed bread, making sure all pieces are thoroughly coated. Gently fold in the apple pie filling and chopped nuts (if using). Allow the mixture to sit for about 10 minutes so the bread absorbs some of the custard.

Bake the French Toast: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden and the custard is set.

Serve: Once baked, allow the dish to cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with warm maple syrup.
